Union Minister Sonowal Takes Legal Action Against Forged Election Letter
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal filed a formal police complaint on Monday. He targeted a forged letter circulating widely on social media platforms. This fake document falsely claimed to originate from him.
FIR Lodged at Parliament Street Police Station
Sonowal's assistant private secretary, Mukul Chandra Lahkar, submitted the First Information Report. They filed it at the Parliament Street police station in New Delhi. The FIR alleges the letter was created with malicious intent.
The forged letter bore Sonowal's official letterhead and featured a fake signature. It was addressed to the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The content referred to the ground situation in Assam. It urged strategic course corrections before the upcoming state assembly elections.
Sonowal Denounces Document as "Completely Fake"
The former Assam chief minister strongly denied any connection to the letter. He called the document completely fake and fabricated. Sonowal issued a statement on the social media platform X to clarify his position.
"It has come to my notice that a forged letter is being circulated by miscreants," Sonowal stated. He emphasized the letter used his official letterhead and a counterfeit signature. The minister described this act as a serious criminal offence.
The complaint involves charges of forgery, impersonation, and misuse of government identity. Sonowal believes the perpetrators aimed to spread misinformation. They also intended to discredit a constitutional authority during an election period.
Police Investigation Underway
Law enforcement agencies have received instructions to investigate this matter on priority. The FIR has been assigned to Sub-Inspector Mohit Kumar for detailed examination. Authorities will pursue strict legal action against those responsible for creating and distributing the fake letter.
The FIR specifically notes the document targets Sonowal's reputation deliberately. It claims the forgery aims to create disharmony in Assam. The state is currently preparing for important assembly elections.
Appeal to Public and Media
Sonowal made a direct appeal to citizens and media organizations. He urged them not to rely on or circulate such fraudulent material. The minister stressed that information should only be verified through official sources.
His office clarified the forged document was designed to mislead voters. It also aimed to tarnish his public image at this critical political juncture. The BJP has dismissed the letter as a malicious attempt to sow confusion. The party believes it seeks to undermine their election campaign in Assam.
This incident highlights growing concerns about misinformation during election seasons. It demonstrates how forged documents can potentially influence political discourse. The legal action underscores the seriousness with which authorities treat such violations.
