Sonia Gandhi Challenges Modi Government's Delimitation Proposal
Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has intensified the opposition's protest by raising critical questions about the delimitation exercise being planned by the Modi government. In a media article published on Monday, she argued that any delimitation must be preceded by a census and should be "politically equitable" rather than just arithmetically balanced.
Key Demands and Concerns
Sonia Gandhi emphasized that states which have been pioneers in family planning, as well as smaller states, must not be placed at an absolute or relative disadvantage. She explained, "A proportionate increase may, in fact, result in the loss of relative influence because the difference in absolute numbers get magnified." This statement highlights her concern that the proposed changes could unfairly impact certain regions.
Additionally, she has sought an OBC sub-quota for women, noting that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had made this demand during the passage of the Nari Vandan Adhiniyam in 2023. She clarified, "Reservation for women is not the issue here. That has already been settled. The real issue is delimitation which, based on the information unofficially available, is extremely dangerous and an assault on the Constitution itself."
Accusations Against the Government
Sonia Gandhi accused the Modi government of "narrative management during troubled times" and described the delimitation process as "deeply flawed and anti-democratic." She urged the government not to rush through such consequential amendments, pointing out that reservation for women in local bodies and panchayats came after discussions spanning five years.
She suggested that the government could call an all-party meeting after April 29 and take up the legislative business in the monsoon session of Parliament in July, allowing for more thorough deliberation.
Congress's Parliamentary Strategy
Meanwhile, the Congress party issued a whip to all its Lok Sabha MPs on Monday, directing them to remain present in the House for the special sitting of Parliament. This move underscores the party's commitment to actively participate in the parliamentary proceedings and voice their concerns regarding the delimitation issue.
The ongoing debate over delimitation continues to be a focal point in Indian politics, with Sonia Gandhi's statements adding significant weight to the opposition's stance on the matter.
