Siddaramaiah on Assembly Elections 2026: Congress Improved in Kerala, Anti-Incumbency in WB and TN
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has commented on the recently concluded assembly elections in multiple states, highlighting the performance of the Congress party. He stated that the Congress performed better in Kerala compared to previous elections, while anti-incumbency trends may have influenced the outcomes in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to the media, Siddaramaiah noted that the election results reflect the changing political dynamics in these states. In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) showed significant improvement, narrowing the gap with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF). The chief minister attributed this to the party's focused campaign and local issues.
Regarding West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, Siddaramaiah pointed out that anti-incumbency sentiments likely played a role. In West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress faced a strong challenge from the BJP and other parties, while in Tamil Nadu, the DMK-led alliance managed to retain power despite some losses. He added that the Congress is analyzing these trends to strengthen its position in future elections.
The assembly elections 2026 have been closely watched as a key indicator of public mood ahead of the next general elections. Siddaramaiah's remarks come as the Congress seeks to rebuild its base in states where it has been out of power for years. He emphasized that the party's performance in Kerala is a positive sign, and efforts are underway to address anti-incumbency in other regions.
The chief minister also stressed the importance of unity within the opposition to counter the ruling BJP at the national level. He called for a collective strategy to take on the government on issues like inflation, unemployment, and farmers' distress.
