The Shiv Sena, once a formidable force in Maharashtra politics, marks its 60th anniversary amid internal strife and existential challenges. The Uddhav Thackeray faction is grappling with a severe crisis, while the breakaway group led by Eknath Shinde struggles to assert its relevance.
History of Revolts
It is not that the Shiv Sena was new to revolts. Right from stalwarts like Chhagan Bhujbal to Ganesh Naik to Narayan Rane to Raj Thackeray, it had faced many rebellions. However, the current split, which saw a significant number of legislators siding with Shinde, has been the most damaging.
Uddhav Thackeray's Existential Crisis
The Uddhav faction, which controls the party's original symbol and legacy, is fighting to retain its identity. With dwindling support and legal battles over party assets, the faction's survival is uncertain.
Shinde Group's Relevance Battle
On the other hand, Eknath Shinde's faction, which allied with the BJP to form the government, is struggling to establish its own political footing. Despite holding power, the group faces challenges in consolidating its base and proving its longevity.
As the Shiv Sena turns 60, both factions are locked in a struggle for relevance, with the party's future hanging in the balance.
