Shibu Theckumpuram has emerged victorious in the Kothamangalam Assembly constituency, securing over 73,000 votes and defeating the incumbent CPI(M) MLA Antony John by a margin of nearly 17,000 votes. The contest was highly competitive, reflecting the intense political rivalry in the region.

Constituency Details

Kothamangalam, numbered as constituency 87, is located in the Ernakulam district of Kerala and falls under the Idukki parliamentary constituency. Formed in 1957 and redrawn during the 2008 delimitation, the constituency covers the Kothamangalam municipality and panchayats such as Kuttampuzha. It has approximately 160,000 electors. This general seat is characterized by a mix of rubber and spice farming, industries, and a significant population of Syrian Christian voters in the hilly terrain.

Previous Election Results

Antony John of the CPI(M), representing the Left Democratic Front (LDF), had been the sitting MLA since 2016. In the 2021 elections, he won with 64,234 votes (47.1 percent), defeating KC(M)'s Shibu Thekkumpuram, who received 57,629 votes, by a margin of 6,605 votes at a high turnout. The margin had been even larger in 2016, at 19,282 votes. The LDF has traditionally dominated the constituency through labor and minority support, often outperforming UDF challengers.

The election campaign highlighted several pressing issues affecting Kothamangalam.
