Amit Shah Unveils BJP's Tribal Welfare Vision for Assam
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday placed tribal welfare at the forefront of BJP's election campaign in Assam, making a significant promise to provide "a cow and a buffalo in every tribal household" if the party returns to power for a third consecutive term.
Comprehensive Tribal Upliftment Plan
Addressing a large rally in Goalpara's Dudhnoi area, Shah revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have prepared a detailed blueprint for tribal development. "Each tribal family will be given a cow and a buffalo, and we will establish dairy infrastructure in every district. We will fulfill it," Shah declared with conviction.
The BJP's manifesto further expands this commitment, promising to provide 25 lakh poor families with two milch cows each under the Chief Minister's Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojana, creating a comprehensive livestock distribution program.
Contrasting Development Records
Shah drew sharp contrasts between BJP's approach and previous Congress governments, claiming that Congress administrations had spent only ₹25,000 crore on tribal welfare since India's independence. In comparison, he highlighted that the Modi government has allocated ₹1.38 lakh crore for tribal development over the past eleven years, representing a substantial increase in financial commitment.
Goalpara as "Mini Assam"
Describing Goalpara as "Mini Assam," Shah emphasized the district's diverse tribal composition including Rabha, Bodo, Hajong, Koch communities and Adivasi tea garden workers. He asserted that only the BJP possesses the vision and capability to ensure their comprehensive development.
Addressing concerns about the Uniform Civil Code, Shah categorically stated that tribal areas will not come under its purview, dismissing Congress claims as "rumours designed to scare tribals."
Education Hub Development Promise
Later in Palashbari, Shah accused Congress of attempting to block legislation for establishing an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Assam, while highlighting BJP's success in ensuring its establishment. "Approach Assam, Aspire Assam and Inspire Assam — that is our policy," he told enthusiastic crowds.
Shah announced plans to develop Palashbari into a major education hub, signaling BJP's commitment to educational infrastructure development in the region.
Security and Stability Claims
Targeting the opposition, Shah referred to allegations against Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi regarding connections with "an enemy country," though he did not mention Gogoi by name. He further accused Congress of transforming Assam into a hub for infiltrators, promising that BJP would "send back each identified infiltrator" if granted another five years in power.
Highlighting peace accords signed since 2019 and the surrender of over 10,000 youths, Shah claimed BJP has successfully restored stability in Assam. He issued a warning that if Congress wins even a few seats in the April 9 polls, instability would return to the state.
Campaign Trail Developments
Campaigning for BJP candidates across Goalpara West, Dudhnoi, Palashbari and Boko Chaygaon ST constituencies, Shah urged voters not to "waste a single vote on the hand" (Congress symbol) but to support the lotus (BJP symbol).
An interesting development occurred when Shah's helicopter developed a technical snag, forcing him to travel by road to Goalpara and Dudhnoi. The Home Minister turned this inconvenience into an opportunity, stating it allowed him to experience "the beauty of Assam's nature" firsthand.
The comprehensive tribal welfare package, combined with promises of educational development and security assurances, forms the cornerstone of BJP's campaign strategy as Assam approaches crucial elections.
