SETC Bus Bookings Spike Ahead of Tamil Nadu Polling Day
Ticket reservations on the State Export Transport Corporation (SETC) are experiencing a significant surge for next week, driven by numerous individuals employed in Chennai who are arranging visits to their hometowns to participate in the election on April 23, coupled with the subsequent long weekend. This trend highlights the intersection of electoral participation and travel logistics in the region.
Premium Services Fully Booked for Night Before Polling
With the exception of a limited number of standard services, tickets for premium bus routes between Chennai and Trichy have been completely reserved for the evening preceding the voting day. This high demand underscores the critical role of public transport in facilitating voter mobility during election periods.
N Saravanan, a resident of Thuraiyur, commented, "All five buses operated by SETC between Chennai and Thuraiyur are fully booked for the day before polling. Many professionals working in Chennai have their voting registrations in native villages. Although Musiri is an assembly constituency, it lacks night services from Chennai, which could potentially impact voter turnout."
Transit Challenges for Residents of Smaller Towns
Buses from Chennai to Trichy's KKBT terminal are fully booked between 6 PM and 12 AM on April 22, creating difficulties for residents of smaller towns who depend on Trichy as a transit hub. S Haja Mohamed, a native of Thuvakudi working in Tambaram, expressed concern, stating, "We have a working day on Wednesday, April 22, and cannot depart the city before 6 PM. Night bus services are essential for planning our travel to cast votes effectively."
Increased Reliance on Private Transport Options
Even tickets for SETC buses bound for Madurai and Tuticorin from Chennai have sold out for the night before the polling day, forcing many commuters to turn to private bus operators that charge higher fares. This shift highlights the strain on public transport infrastructure during peak travel times linked to electoral events.
SETC's Response to the Rush
A senior SETC official informed TOI, "Bookings for SETC buses are in high demand for both April 21 and 22. Since all our drivers and conductors will utilize postal ballot facilities to cast their votes, we plan to operate additional buses to manage the rush before the polling day." This proactive measure aims to alleviate congestion and support voter participation.
The situation reflects broader trends in transportation and civic engagement, as electoral schedules influence travel patterns and public service adjustments in Tamil Nadu.
