Congress MP Kumari Selja Accuses Centre of Deliberately Weakening MGNREGA in Hisar

Congress MP Kumari Selja on Sunday launched a scathing attack on the central government, alleging that the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is being systematically weakened. Speaking at a panchayat-level protest programme in Patli Dabar village of Sirsa district, Selja described MGNREGA as a crucial lifeline that supported millions of families during difficult periods, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Allegations of Dilution and Power Deprivation

Selja asserted that recent changes introduced by the central government are undermining the core principles of MGNREGA. She highlighted that gram panchayats are being deprived of their decision-making powers, which is resulting in the neglect of local development needs. The Congress leader emphasized that this deliberate dilution is stripping workers of their legal rights to demand employment and receive timely wages.

The event, held in Ding Mod area, saw the presence of Kalanwali MLA Sheeshpal Keherwala, former MLA Prahlad Singh Gillakheda, and a large number of villagers. Selja used the platform to voice strong opposition to what she termed as the government's anti-people policies.

Accusations of Misusing Central Agencies

In a significant escalation of her criticism, Selja also alleged the misuse of central investigative agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED). She claimed that these agencies are being weaponized to harass political opponents, adding a layer of political controversy to her statements.

Congress's Grassroots Strategy and Future Plans

Referring to organisational activities, Selja mentioned that the training imparted to district presidents during Rahul Gandhi's recent visit to Kurukshetra would soon be reflected at the grassroots level. She affirmed that the Congress party remains committed to raising public interest issues and will continue to strongly oppose policies perceived as detrimental to the people.

The protest in Sirsa district underscores the growing political tensions in Haryana, with Selja positioning MGNREGA and local governance as central issues in the ongoing discourse.
