A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday on the service road of the Katraj Dehu Road bypass, beneath the Navale Bridge, claiming the life of a 31-year-old motorcycle rider. The victim has been identified as Rameshwar Machindra Bhogle, a resident of Katraj. The incident took place around 12:30am when a ready-mix concrete (RMC) truck fell on him.
The RMC truck driver, Gorakh Ransure (50) of Loni Kalbhor, sustained injuries and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.
Details of the Accident
According to Inspector Ishwar Chavan of the Narhe police, the RMC truck was traveling from Katraj Chowk towards Warje. It took a right turn at a traffic signal beneath Navale Bridge. The driver claimed the signal was green, but he lost control while negotiating the turn. At that moment, Bhogle was riding his motorcycle from Katraj towards Bavdhan. The truck fell on its side, trapping Bhogle underneath.
Bhogle worked as a bouncer at an eatery in Katraj and had returned home after the eatery closed. He later went out on his motorcycle to meet a friend in Bavdhan, which led to the fatal accident.
Recurring Safety Concerns
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers on this accident-prone stretch. Over the past few years, numerous fatal accidents have been reported on this road, drawing sharp criticism of authorities for failing to implement effective safety measures for motorists.
Inspector Chavan noted that there is a continuous slope from Katraj Chowk towards Navale Bridge. Heavy vehicles often travel at high speeds during the night, which contributes to such accidents. The police are investigating the matter further.
