Rijiju Accuses Congress of Wasting Funds to Undermine Development
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday alleged that the Congress party spent Rs 26 crore on Rahul Gandhi's scuba-diving visit to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with the sole aim of discrediting the government's ambitious Nicobar project. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Rijiju claimed that the expenditure was a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation and stall a project crucial for national security and economic growth.
Details of the Alleged Expenditure
According to Rijiju, the Rs 26 crore figure includes costs for travel, logistics, security, and media arrangements for Gandhi's visit. He stated that the Congress leader's trip was not a genuine fact-finding mission but a political stunt to generate negative publicity. "This is a clear example of how the opposition prioritizes political vendetta over national interest," Rijiju said, adding that the Nicobar project would bring strategic benefits and employment to the region.
Government's Stand on the Nicobar Project
The Nicobar project, officially known as the Great Nicobar Island Development Project, aims to establish a transshipment port, an international airport, and a power plant to boost trade and tourism. The government has emphasized its potential to enhance India's strategic footprint in the Indian Ocean region. Rijiju accused Gandhi of being part of a larger ecosystem that consistently opposes projects linked to national development, including infrastructure and defense initiatives.
Congress Responds to Allegations
The Congress party dismissed Rijiju's claims as baseless and diversionary. A party spokesperson said, "Rahul Gandhi's visit was to highlight the concerns of indigenous communities and environmental impact of the project. The government is trying to silence dissent by leveling false allegations." The Congress also demanded a detailed breakdown of the Rs 26 crore expenditure, questioning the source of the information.
Political Implications and Public Reaction
The exchange has intensified the political debate over the Nicobar project, with the BJP accusing the Congress of hindering development and the Congress alleging lack of transparency. Environmental activists and local tribal groups have also raised concerns about the project's impact on biodiversity and the rights of the Shompen and Nicobarese communities. Rijiju's comments come ahead of expected parliamentary discussions on the project's budget allocation.
Strategic Importance of the Nicobar Islands
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are strategically located near the Malacca Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. The government has argued that the development project is essential for India's maritime security and economic integration with Southeast Asia. Rijiju reiterated that the project has been cleared after rigorous environmental and social impact assessments, and that the opposition's claims are unfounded.
