Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a scathing attack on both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over rampant corruption in West Bengal. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, Gandhi accused the two parties of engaging in a 'competition of corruption' that has left the state's development in shambles.
Allegations of Misgovernance
Gandhi specifically pointed to the alleged involvement of TMC leaders in the coal smuggling scam and the recent school job recruitment irregularities. He claimed that the BJP, despite being in power at the centre, has turned a blind eye to these malpractices to protect its political interests in the state. 'The BJP and TMC are two sides of the same coin. They are both responsible for the loot of West Bengal's resources,' Gandhi said.
Political Reactions
The TMC quickly dismissed Gandhi's allegations, terming them as 'baseless' and 'politically motivated'. Senior TMC leader and state minister Firhad Hakim said, 'Rahul Gandhi should look at the corruption in his own party before pointing fingers at others.' The BJP also retaliated, accusing Gandhi of trying to divert attention from the Congress's own failures in states where it is in power.
Political analysts believe that Gandhi's attack is part of a broader strategy to position the Congress as a viable alternative to both the BJP and regional parties like the TMC in the run-up to the 2024 general elections. However, with the Congress's dwindling presence in West Bengal, it remains to be seen if this rhetoric will translate into electoral gains.
The corruption issue has been a major talking point in West Bengal politics, with both the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP trading accusations. The state has witnessed several high-profile scams in recent years, including the chit fund scam and the illegal mining of sand and coal. Gandhi's remarks are expected to intensify the political debate in the state ahead of the upcoming panchayat elections.
