Rahul Gandhi Slams Modi and Shah Over Tamil Nadu Control Bid
Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has launched a fierce political assault on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During a campaign rally in Tamil Nadu, Gandhi accused the top BJP leadership of attempting to establish remote control governance over the state from the national capital, Delhi.
Allegations of Seeking a "Weak" and "Compromised" Chief Minister
Addressing a gathering in Ponneri, located in the Tiruvallur district, Rahul Gandhi articulated a pointed critique. He asserted that Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah harbor intentions to dominate Tamil Nadu's political landscape by ensuring the installation of a pliable Chief Minister. "Modi and Amit Shah want to rule Tamil Nadu from Delhi," Gandhi declared emphatically. "They desire a Chief Minister from Tamil Nadu who is willing to obediently follow directives issued from Delhi. Essentially, they are seeking a compromised CM for TN."
Gandhi connected this alleged strategy directly to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) political alliances within the state. "Consequently, they have selected the AIADMK as their alliance partner," he stated, implying that this partnership is designed to facilitate the BJP's overarching control.
Accusations of Cultural and Linguistic Assault
The Congress leader escalated his rhetoric by framing the BJP and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), as adversaries of Tamil identity. "The BJP and RSS are waging a war on Tamil Nadu, its cherished language, and its rich cultural heritage," Gandhi alleged. He vowed resistance, stating, "We will not allow that to happen."
Gandhi characterized the BJP-RSS combine as fundamentally ignorant of Tamil ethos. "They are ignorant. They do not comprehend who the Tamils are. They fail to grasp what the Tamil language and identity signify to the people of Tamil Nadu," he argued. Positioning the DMK and the broader INDIA bloc as defenders, he added, "Our brothers in the DMK and the INDIA alliance are committed to protecting Tamil Nadu from their assault."
Campaign Strategy and Notable Omissions
This rally marked Rahul Gandhi's inaugural campaign meeting in Tamil Nadu for the ongoing assembly elections. Observers noted a significant strategic element in his address: the deliberate omission of any mention of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. This silence extended beyond the speech. Earlier on the same day, Gandhi had campaigned in Puducherry, coinciding with Chief Minister Stalin's own campaign schedule. Despite the proximity, Gandhi did not meet with Stalin nor reference him in his public remarks.
The Congress leader's campaign trail continued with scheduled events in Sholingur within the Ranipet district and Thuraiyur in the Trichy district later that day, as part of his efforts to bolster the secular progressive alliance led by the DMK.
