Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party after its Gujarat unit chief made derogatory remarks against a woman Congress MP. The Congress leader said the 'mask of nari vandana (women's worship) is off'.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy erupted when BJP Gujarat president C R Patil allegedly used inappropriate language while referring to Congress MP from Gujarat, who is a woman. The remarks were made during a political rally, sparking outrage among opposition parties.
Rahul Gandhi's Response
Taking to social media, Rahul Gandhi wrote: 'The mask of nari vandana is off. The BJP's disrespect towards women is now visible for all to see.' He further accused the ruling party of hypocrisy, pointing out that while they claim to respect women, their leaders often make sexist comments.
The Congress party has demanded an apology from Patil and the BJP leadership. Several women's organizations have also condemned the remarks, calling for strict action against the BJP leader.
BJP's Defense
The BJP, however, has defended its Gujarat chief, claiming that his remarks were taken out of context. Party spokesperson said Patil's statement was misrepresented by the Congress to gain political mileage. They also accused Rahul Gandhi of making baseless allegations.
This incident comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the upcoming elections in Gujarat. The state is set to go to polls later this year, and both parties are aggressively campaigning.
Political Reactions
Several opposition leaders have rallied behind the Congress MP, condemning the BJP's 'regressive mindset'. The Aam Aadmi Party also criticized the BJP, saying it reflects their attitude towards women. Meanwhile, the Congress MP in question has not yet commented on the issue.
The controversy has once again brought the issue of women's respect in politics to the forefront, with many calling for a more dignified discourse in public life.
