Punjab Farmer Organizations Urge Political Parties to Address Agricultural Demands in Election Manifestos
In a significant move, seven farmer organizations from Punjab have submitted formal letters to four prominent political parties, pressing for the inclusion of various agricultural and state-specific demands in their upcoming election manifestos. This initiative aims to prioritize farmer welfare and the future development of Punjab as political campaigns gain momentum.
Key Demands Outlined by Farmer Groups
The farmer organizations have articulated a comprehensive list of demands, which they believe are crucial for the sustainability and profitability of agriculture in the region. These include:
- Resolution of water disputes in accordance with the Riparian law, ensuring fair distribution and management of water resources.
- Farm debt waiver for both farmers and agricultural workers, addressing long-standing financial burdens.
- Implementation of Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops such as potato, maize, pulses, and mustard, modeled after the bhavantar scheme to guarantee stable incomes.
- Creation of employment opportunities to support rural economies and reduce migration.
- Payment for sugarcane at a fixed rate of Rs 46 per quintal, ensuring timely and adequate compensation for growers.
- Effective measures to tackle drug abuse, a pressing social issue affecting communities across Punjab.
Political Outreach and Affiliations
The letters were directed to key political figures, including Punjab Aam Aadmi Party president Aman Arora, Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, and Shiromani Akali Dal head Sukhbir Badal. Notably, six out of the seven farmer organizations are affiliated with the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a major coalition of farmer unions. However, farmer leader Jangvir Singh Chouhan clarified that this initiative is independent of the SKM's official program.
"These farm groups have taken this initiative on their own and urge various political parties to seriously look into these demands and include these in their respective election manifestos, which are expected to start taking shape in the near future," stated Chouhan.
Historical Context and Ongoing Struggles
For an extended period, these farmer organizations have been advocating for these demands, organizing protests against both central and state governments to push for implementation. Chouhan emphasized that issues like MSP and farm debt waiver have remained unresolved despite promises from previous administrations.
"The demands for the MSP and farm debt waiver are long pending. No government has ever paid heed to it even as all the previous governments made claims over these issues," he added, highlighting the persistent challenges faced by the agricultural community.
As political parties begin drafting their election agendas, the farmer groups hope that their concerted efforts will lead to concrete policy changes, ultimately benefiting farmers and revitalizing Punjab's agricultural sector.
