Punjab CM Mann Slams BJP Over ED Raids on Minister Arora

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government on Friday following Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at the residence of Punjab Cabinet minister Sanjeev Arora. Mann accused the BJP of engaging in "politics of intimidation" against non-BJP state governments, asserting that democracy is being systematically strangled across the nation.

Allegations of Democratic Strangulation

Addressing media representatives, Mann declared, "We have witnessed in recent times that democracy is being slowly strangled. Non-BJP governments, particularly those of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), are being deliberately troubled. This politics of intimidation is unfolding throughout the entire country."

The Chief Minister cited multiple examples to support his claims, including the recent changes in West Bengal's administrative apparatus ahead of Assembly elections. "In West Bengal, the entire cadre of officers, including the Director General of Police, were replaced prior to the Assembly elections," Mann stated, suggesting a pattern of interference.

Recent ED Actions Against AAP Leaders

Mann highlighted two specific instances of what he described as targeted actions against AAP representatives in Punjab. "Just days ago, ED conducted raids at properties linked to AAP's Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Ashok Mittal, who operates a university serving over 40,000 students," he revealed.

"Presently, ED raids are underway at the residence of Cabinet minister Sanjeev Arora, who oversees the crucial portfolios of power and local bodies. Minister Arora notably defeated the BJP candidate in the Ludhiana (West) Assembly byelections. Suddenly, he finds himself under scrutiny," Mann added with evident frustration.

Political Motivations Ahead of Punjab Elections

The Punjab Chief Minister alleged that the BJP is strategically preparing for the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections by deploying central agencies to intimidate political opponents. According to Mann, the saffron party faces significant challenges in fielding candidates across the state's constituencies.

"The BJP is reportedly struggling to identify even 117 candidates for Punjab's electoral districts," Mann claimed. "Consequently, they are exclusively targeting non-BJP governments, utilizing the ED against opposition leaders. However, these investigations typically yield no substantial outcomes."

Defiance Against Alleged Dictatorship

Mann's rhetoric escalated as he characterized the current political climate. "This is not democracy; this is dictatorship. They may dispatch the ED, CBI, or any agency at their disposal, but we will not be intimidated," he asserted defiantly.

The Chief Minister elaborated on what he perceives as the BJP's strategy: "The BJP aims to frighten opponents by sending ED officials, hoping they either withdraw from political contests or defect to the BJP through what they term their 'washing machine' process."

Minister Arora's Response to ED Actions

Meanwhile, Punjab's Industries and Power Minister Sanjeev Arora responded to the raids with a statement of cooperation. Following the ED's search operations at his premises, Arora posted on social media platform X: "Good Morning! An action by the Enforcement Directorate took place at my premises. As a responsible citizen, I will fully cooperate with the agencies, and I am confident that the truth will prevail."

Context of Previous AAP Targeting

This incident follows similar actions against AAP leaders. On April 15, the ED conducted Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) searches at properties associated with AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal. Mittal was recently appointed deputy leader of the AAP in the Rajya Sabha, succeeding MP Raghav Chadha.

The pattern of central agency actions against AAP figures in Punjab has intensified political tensions, with the state government framing these developments as part of a broader campaign against regional opposition parties ahead of crucial electoral battles.
