Prasar Bharati Reverses Decision on Dharwad Radio Unit Relocation
In a significant development, Prasar Bharati has officially withdrawn its controversial proposal to temporarily shift the Regional News Unit (RNU) of All India Radio Dharwad to Bengaluru. This decision comes after mounting protests from the public, writers, and activists in North Karnataka, who vehemently opposed the move.
Official Withdrawal and Political Intervention
Jitendra Singh Katara, the Deputy Director General (Policy) of Prasar Bharati in Delhi, issued a letter dated April 22, stating that the order from April 17 regarding the temporary relocation of the RNU workload from Dharwad to Bengaluru has been withdrawn with immediate effect. This swift reversal highlights the sensitivity of the issue and the pressure exerted by stakeholders.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, who represents the Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency, played a pivotal role in addressing the concerns. He emphasized that there was strong opposition from the people of North Karnataka regarding the proposed relocation. "We approached Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw and informed him about the scope of the Dharwad RNU and the necessity of keeping it in Dharwad," Joshi stated.
He further added, "Responding to our request, Vaishnaw ordered that the RNU will continue to operate in Dharwad itself." Joshi expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of North Karnataka to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Vaishnaw for their prompt action in resolving the matter.
Background and Public Outcry
The proposal to shift the RNU had sparked widespread discontent, with many viewing it as a move that could undermine regional broadcasting and cultural representation. A report published by TOI on April 19 brought the issue to the forefront, galvanizing writers, activists, and the general public to launch protests against Prasar Bharati's decision.
The protests highlighted the importance of local news units in preserving regional identity and ensuring effective communication. The withdrawal of the proposal is seen as a victory for public advocacy and a testament to the power of collective action in influencing policy decisions.
This incident underscores the critical role of community engagement in governance and the need for authorities to consider regional sentiments when making administrative changes. The continued operation of the RNU in Dharwad is expected to bolster local journalism and maintain the cultural fabric of North Karnataka.
