Panneerselvam dismisses rumors of joining TVK
O Panneerselvam, a senior leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has strongly denied rumors that he plans to quit the party and join the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). In a statement issued on Tuesday, he denounced what he called 'the betrayal of the people's trust' and said that unfortunately, the current highlight of the political scenario in Tamil Nadu is all about leaders switching loyalties.
Rumors termed baseless
Panneerselvam dismissed the speculation as completely unfounded. 'There is no truth in these rumors. I remain firmly with the DMK and will continue to work under the leadership of M.K. Stalin,' he said. The veteran politician urged party workers and the public not to pay heed to such 'mischievous propaganda' aimed at destabilizing the party.
Criticism of party-switching trend
Without naming any specific individuals, Panneerselvam expressed concern over the growing trend of politicians switching parties frequently. 'This trend erodes public faith in democracy. Leaders must prioritize ideology and public service over personal ambitions,' he added. His remarks come amid a spate of defections in Tamil Nadu politics, with several legislators moving between parties ahead of the next assembly elections.
Background of the speculation
The rumors gained traction after Panneerselvam was seen in informal discussions with TVK functionaries at a public event last week. However, he clarified that those were merely courtesy conversations and had no political significance. 'I have no plans to leave the DMK. My political journey began with this party, and it will end here,' he asserted.
DMK's response
The DMK leadership has also dismissed the rumors, with party spokesperson A. Raja stating, 'OPS is a loyal soldier of the DMK. Such baseless rumors are spread by those who fear the party's growing strength.' The party has urged its cadre to remain united and focused on organizational work.
