Opposition Parties to Bring Fresh Impeachment Motion Against Chief Election Commissioner

In a significant political development, opposition parties are set to introduce a new motion to impeach Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. This announcement was made by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP and spokesperson Derek O'Brien during a press conference in Kolkata on Monday.

Details of the Impeachment Notice

O'Brien revealed that 19 political parties and approximately 300 Members of Parliament had previously submitted an impeachment notice against CEC Gyanesh Kumar. However, this initial effort was rejected earlier this month by both Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha Chairman, Vice President CP Radhakrishnan.

"In the coming days, a fresh impeachment notice with additional charges will be brought," O'Brien stated, emphasizing the opposition's determination to pursue the matter. The motion marks the first such attempt to remove a sitting Chief Election Commissioner in India's history.

Background and Electoral Context

The push for impeachment comes against the backdrop of the ongoing assembly elections in West Bengal, where the TMC has held power since 2011 and is seeking a fourth consecutive term. The pre-election period has been marked by heightened tensions, particularly over issues such as:

  • The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls
  • The Election Commission's removal of IAS and IPS officers in the state

With the Model Code of Conduct currently in force, the Election Commission is overseeing state machinery during this critical electoral phase. West Bengal's 294 assembly seats are being contested in two phases: 152 seats will vote on Thursday, followed by the remaining 142 constituencies on April 29. Vote counting is scheduled for May 4.

Allegations of Political Conspiracy

During the press conference, Derek O'Brien escalated his criticism by alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is orchestrating a "larger conspiracy" ahead of the second phase of polling. He claimed to have credible information about a meeting convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah with the heads of central investigative agencies.

"In the next 100 to 150 hours, some serious or devious action has been planned before the second phase of the polls," O'Brien asserted, suggesting such developments were likely in districts of south Bengal.

Criticism of BJP Leadership

O'Brien further criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of acting like a "full-time BJP worker" rather than a government official. Shah, who serves as the BJP's chief strategist and former party president, had previously announced plans to spend 15 days campaigning in West Bengal.

The TMC spokesperson also accused the BJP of deploying "disproportionate force" to defeat Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating: "To defeat a woman, you need 18 cabinet ministers, the prime minister, the home minister, the defence minister, several chief ministers, central agencies and thousands of security personnel."

The opposition has repeatedly accused CEC Gyanesh Kumar of favoring the ruling BJP, allegations that have intensified during the West Bengal election campaign. This fresh impeachment motion represents a continuation of these political confrontations as India's electoral process unfolds.
