Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today accompanied Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari during the historic breakthrough ceremony of the Zojila Tunnel on Tuesday. Speaking at the event, Abdullah emphasized the transformative impact of the tunnel on daily life in the region, highlighting improved access to education, healthcare, and markets, as well as a significant boost to tourism and trade.
Zojila Tunnel: A Game-Changer for the Region
Describing the tunnel as a project that would "transform daily life," Omar Abdullah noted that it would ease connectivity and bring improvements that may not be fully realized today. He congratulated the local population and welcomed the breakthrough as the fulfillment of a long-pending demand. However, he stressed the need to complete the remaining works at the earliest to make the tunnel fully operational.
Call for Enhanced Air Connectivity to Kargil
On broader connectivity, Omar Abdullah highlighted the need for improved air connectivity for Kargil. He acknowledged that efforts had been made in this direction but said more support was required. Referring to this, he stated that there remains "one aspiration still unfulfilled" and urged Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to support regular flight connectivity for Kargil, expressing hope that it would soon become a reality.
The Chief Minister's appeal underscores the strategic and logistical importance of Kargil, which remains cut off by road during harsh winters. Regular flights would ensure year-round connectivity, boosting economic activity and access to essential services. The Zojila Tunnel, once completed, will also provide all-weather road connectivity to the region, complementing air links.
Omar Abdullah's remarks came during a ceremony that marked a milestone in the construction of the Zojila Tunnel, which is expected to reduce travel time between Srinagar and Leh significantly. The tunnel is part of a broader infrastructure push in the Union Territory, aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering development.
