Odisha's Electoral Roll Revision Delayed as EC Focuses on State Polls

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, scheduled to commence in Odisha from Wednesday, is now likely to be postponed by several days. This delay arises because the Election Commission (EC) is currently preoccupied with managing elections in various other states across India.

State Machinery Awaits Formal Directions

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R S Gopalan has confirmed that the state machinery is fully prepared to initiate the SIR exercise. However, he emphasized that the process can only begin once the EC issues a detailed timeline. "We have not received the timeline from the EC yet. It may take some days," Gopalan stated, indicating that the revision will proceed only after formal directions are communicated by the commission.

Importance of the Special Intensive Revision

The SIR is a critical exercise designed to ensure error-free and updated electoral rolls ahead of upcoming elections. During this intensive revision, Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) conduct door-to-door verification to achieve several key objectives. These include identifying eligible new voters, removing duplicate or ineligible names, correcting demographic details, and updating addresses for electors who have relocated.

Historical Context and Focus Areas in Odisha

In Odisha, SIRs have historically played a vital role in addressing persistent electoral issues. The state faces challenges such as migration-related duplication, the inclusion of newly eligible youth voters, and correction of inaccuracies in voter details, especially in urban areas experiencing rapid population growth. Electoral authorities also prioritize deleting names of deceased voters based on thorough field verification and inputs from local agencies.

This comprehensive approach aims to enhance the accuracy and integrity of the voter list, ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process for all citizens in the state.
