Odisha Chief Minister Lauds Women's Reservation Law as Historic Empowerment Move
Ahead of the crucial special session of Parliament scheduled from April 16 to 18, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has strongly endorsed the constitutional amendment to implement 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. This landmark legislation, which also includes increasing Lok Sabha seats to 850 from 2029, represents what Majhi described as the most revolutionary step towards women's empowerment in independent India.
Transformative Impact on Women-Led Development
Addressing a Nari Shakti Vandan Town Hall Meeting in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, Chief Minister Majhi emphasized that this move would provide a major push to women-led development while significantly strengthening their role in national policymaking. "This is not just a law, but the flight of dreams of crores of women. When women take leadership roles, the entire society and nation benefit," Majhi declared passionately.
The Chief Minister highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, while staying firmly rooted in Indian traditions, has rolled out numerous welfare programmes for women over the past twelve years. He characterized the women's reservation law as the most decisive intervention among these initiatives.
Odisha's Progressive Women Representation
Majhi pointed to Odisha's own impressive track record, noting that the state currently has approximately 14.5 lakh women serving as elected representatives in panchayati raj institutions. "Women are no longer just voters but active participants in democracy," he observed, underscoring the evolving political landscape.
The state government's focus remains on building a prosperous Odisha as part of the broader Viksit Bharat vision, with special emphasis on women's economic self-reliance. Majhi cited several key initiatives including:
- The Subhadra Yojana welfare programme
- The Lakhpati Didi economic empowerment programme
- Initiatives aimed at ensuring prosperity at the household level
"True development happens when an ordinary village woman participates in digital banking and modern agriculture," Majhi explained, highlighting the intersection of traditional values and modern opportunities.
Broad Support for Enhanced Women Participation
Odisha Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that women's representation must be reflected equally in legislatures. She urged widespread support for greater participation of women in decision-making processes at all levels of governance.
Deputy Chief Minister and Women and Child Development Minister Pravati Parida added that the reservation law would significantly ease the journey for women leaders from panchayat to Parliament, creating a more seamless pathway for political advancement.
Widespread Acclaim from Diverse Voices
The gathering featured several prominent speakers who unanimously hailed the legislation as both timely and transformative for India's democratic and social landscape. Notable among them was writer and Jnanpith award recipient Pratibha Ray, who joined senior officials and prominent achievers in celebrating this historic development.
As Parliament prepares for its special session to enact these constitutional changes, the consensus in Odisha reflects growing nationwide recognition that enhanced women's representation represents not just political reform, but a fundamental strengthening of India's democratic foundations and social progress.
