NIA Issues Summons to TMC Candidate Manab Parua in 2022 Bhupatinagar Blast Investigation
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has formally issued a summons to Manab Parua, the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Bhagabanpur constituency, demanding his appearance at its Salt Lake office on Thursday for questioning. This move is directly linked to the ongoing investigation into the devastating 2022 Bhupatinagar blast that resulted in three fatalities.
Summons Delivered Amidst Campaigning Activities
The notice, which was officially issued on March 30, was delivered to Parua while he was actively engaged in campaign activities for the upcoming elections. This timing has sparked significant political debate and controversy, with Parua himself labeling the summons as a politically motivated attempt to disrupt his electoral campaign.
Details of the 2022 Bhupatinagar Explosion
The case traces back to December 2, 2022, when a massive explosion tore through the residence of Rajkumar Manna, a Trinamool Congress booth president located in Naruavila. The tragic incident claimed the lives of three individuals: Rajkumar Manna, his brother Devkumar Manna, and Biswajit Gayen. Following the explosion, serious allegations emerged suggesting that the site was being utilized as an illegal bomb-making unit, prompting judicial intervention from the Calcutta High Court.
Previous Raids and Legal Proceedings
Investigative actions in this case have been ongoing for some time. Notably, Parua's residence in Contai was subjected to a raid approximately one year ago as part of the probe. Despite these investigative efforts, Parua managed to remain largely elusive until he eventually secured bail, allowing him to continue his political activities.
Parua's Response and Allegations of Political Motivation
In response to the summons, Manab Parua has publicly stated that he intends to comply with the NIA's directive and appear for questioning as required. However, he has strongly criticized the timing and nature of the summons, describing it as a politically driven maneuver aimed at derailing his campaign efforts. Parua emphasized, "My family and I moved to Contai long before this incident occurred," suggesting his distance from the events in question.
The unfolding situation highlights the intense intersection of legal investigations and political campaigning, particularly in the sensitive context of election periods. As Parua prepares to face questioning, the case continues to draw significant attention from both legal authorities and political observers across the region.
