India commemorated the 54th anniversary of Vijay Diwas on Tuesday, with the nation's leadership paying solemn tributes to the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers who secured a historic victory in the 1971 war, leading to the liberation of Bangladesh.
National Leaders Honour the Fallen Heroes
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a post on the social media platform X, extended his greetings and remembered the indomitable spirit of the armed forces. He stated that the valour of the soldiers not only protected the nation but also carved a permanent moment of pride in India's history.
"On Vijay Diwas, we remember the brave soldiers whose courage and sacrifice ensured India had a historic victory in 1971," PM Modi wrote. He emphasized that their unwavering resolve and dedication to service are a lasting inspiration for every generation of Indians, standing as a testament to their unmatched spirit.
President Murmu Lauds Operation Sindoor & Indigenisation
President Droupadi Murmu also joined in paying homage, recalling the profound devotion and patriotism exhibited by the Indian Armed Forces. In her tribute on X, she specifically highlighted the army's courage and strategic prowess displayed during Operation Sindoor.
This operation was India's powerful retaliatory strike against Pakistan following the devastating Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals. President Murmu praised the operation as a demonstration of self-reliance, strategic resolve, and the effective application of modern warfare techniques by the Indian Army.
She also commended the Army's "Empowerment through Indigenisation" initiative, noting that it reflects the forces' preparedness to tackle future security challenges. Concluding her message with "Jai Hind!", she extended her best wishes to all soldiers and their families.

The conflict is remembered as a military campaign that reshaped history. Indian forces fought shoulder-to-shoulder with the Mukti Bahini (Bangladeshi liberation forces), providing the crucial momentum that led to a swift and overwhelming victory.
This landmark victory ended widespread atrocities and culminated in the surrender of approximately 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in just 13 days—an event recorded as one of the largest military surrenders in modern history.
