BJP President JP Nadda Unveils Welfare Pledges for Puducherry Ahead of Assembly Polls
In a significant pre-election rally in Puducherry, Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President JP Nadda made a series of ambitious promises to voters, positioning the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as the champion of economic development and welfare in the Union Territory. The event, which also featured Union Minister and BJP election in-charge for Puducherry Mansukh Mandaviya, saw Nadda flag off the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha's mega bike rally, setting the stage for a heated electoral contest.
Free Gas Cylinders and Student Incentives Announced
Addressing party workers and supporters, Nadda declared that every household in Puducherry would receive two free gas cylinders annually if the NDA secures victory in the upcoming assembly elections. He specified that one cylinder would be distributed during the Pongal festival and the other on Vinayaka Chaturthi, linking the welfare measure to cultural celebrations.
Beyond the gas cylinder promise, Nadda outlined additional initiatives aimed at students and infrastructure. "We will provide e-scooters for meritorious 12th-class students, establish 30 water ATMs across the Union Territory, and award 10,000 scholarships worth Rs 10,000 each," he stated, emphasizing the NDA's focus on youth and public amenities.
Invoking Modi's Vision and Attacking the Opposition
Nadda invoked Prime Minister Narendra Modi's developmental framework for Puducherry, recalling his acronym "BEST"—Business, Education, Spiritualism, and Tourism—as the mantra for the region's progress. "Under NDA 2.0, we will concentrate on the economic development of Puducherry, ensuring it thrives in all these areas," he assured the crowd.
Sharpening his political rhetoric, Nadda launched a scathing attack on the previous Congress-DMK administration, labeling it "the government of goons." He accused the alliance of fostering corruption, lawlessness, and drug mafia activities, claiming that streets were unsafe until the NDA government restored order. "Congress and DMK governments have led to the suffering of the poor through their corrupt practices," he asserted, contrasting it with the NDA's record.
Economic Achievements and Counter-Narratives
Highlighting India's economic transformation under PM Modi, Nadda noted that the country has risen from being part of the "Fragile Five" economies to the world's fourth largest, with aspirations to become the third-largest soon. This, he argued, underscores the NDA's capability to drive growth in Puducherry.
However, the BJP's narrative faced counterclaims from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who addressed a separate rally in Lawspet. Gandhi alleged that the Puducherry government was "imposed from Delhi" and failed to represent local will, accusing the BJP of favoring corporate interests like those of businessman Gautam Adani. He promised a Congress-DMK alliance would deliver:
- Rs 2,000 monthly assistance for unemployed youth
- 30,000 new jobs
- Free bus travel for women
- Increased age limits for government jobs
- Rs 20 lakh health insurance per family
Election Context and Key Contenders
Polling in Puducherry is scheduled for April 9, with counting set for May 4, as per the Election Commission of India. The current 30-member Legislative Assembly's term concludes on June 15, adding urgency to the campaigns.
The electoral battle is shaping up as a three-cornered contest among:
- The ruling NDA, comprising the NR Congress and BJP
- The Congress-DMK alliance
- Actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)
With welfare promises and sharp political attacks dominating the discourse, the Puducherry assembly elections are poised to be a closely watched affair, reflecting broader national political dynamics.
