The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a work-from-home advisory for private companies in Mumbai following a red alert for heavy rainfall issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The advisory, released on July 6, 2026, also mandates a half-day for semi-government offices to reduce traffic congestion and ensure citizen safety.
Red Alert and Expected Rainfall
The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in Mumbai and its suburbs over the next 48 hours, with some areas expected to receive over 200 mm of rain. The red alert indicates the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas, waterlogging, and disruption to local train services. The BMC has urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Advisory Details for Private and Semi-Government Offices
According to the BMC, private companies are strongly advised to allow employees to work from home to minimize travel risks. Semi-government offices will operate only until 1:00 PM, after which staff are to be sent home. The advisory applies to all offices within Mumbai city limits. A BMC official stated, “We urge all employers to prioritize employee safety and follow the advisory strictly.”
Impact on Public Transport and Infrastructure
Local train services, the lifeline of Mumbai, are expected to run at reduced speeds if water levels rise on tracks. The BMC has deployed pumps and rescue teams in vulnerable areas. Schools and colleges have already been declared closed for the day. The city’s disaster management team is on high alert, with emergency numbers publicized for residents.
Historical Context and Precautionary Measures
Mumbai has faced severe flooding in the past, notably in July 2005 when over 900 mm of rain fell in 24 hours. The current advisory aims to prevent a similar crisis. The BMC has advised residents to avoid parking vehicles under trees or in low-lying areas and to keep emergency kits ready. As of now, no major disruptions have been reported, but the rain is expected to intensify by evening.
