Technical Failure at Dombivli Station Disrupts Mumbai's Central Railway Services
Mumbai Central Railway Disrupted by Dombivli Signalling Failure

Major Signalling Failure Cripples Mumbai's Central Railway Network

Suburban train services on Mumbai's Central Railway line experienced severe disruption on Friday evening following a critical technical failure in the signalling system at Dombivli station. The incident, which occurred during peak rush hour, triggered widespread chaos and left thousands of commuters stranded across multiple stations.

Technical Snag Halts Train Movement

The disruption began around 7 pm when a signalling system failure affected both the up and down local lines, as well as the 5th and 6th lines at Dombivli station. Railway officials suspect that cable damage, possibly due to theft, was the primary cause behind the technical snag. While the fast corridor (lines 3 and 4) remained operational, the failure led to a complete halt of train movement between Thane and Kalyan for an extended period.

Several services were held up mid-section, with passengers trapped inside coaches without proper ventilation or information. Platforms at affected stations witnessed dangerous levels of overcrowding as additional trains continued to arrive without being able to depart.

Phased Restoration Efforts

Central Railway's technical teams rushed to the site immediately after the fault was reported and began restoration work in phases:

  • The down local line resumed operations at 8:58 pm
  • The 5th line was restored at 9:06 pm
  • The up local line became operational at 9:40 pm
  • The 6th line resumed at 9:45 pm under single yellow line working conditions

To mitigate commuter inconvenience during the disruption, railway officials coordinated with local civic bodies to operate special bus services along affected routes. However, the incident had already derailed schedules across the entire main line, impacting slow services in both directions and affecting trains bound for Kalyan, Kasara, and Karjat.

Commuters Face Extreme Hardship

With services thrown into disarray during peak hours, commuters were forced to travel in extremely crowded and uncomfortable conditions. The ripple effect of delays continued well into the night, disrupting evening plans and causing significant inconvenience.

"Such breakdowns during peak hours test our patience to the absolute limit," said Ajit Rane, a Dombivli resident who was among the affected commuters. "We were stuck inside the train for nearly an hour with no announcements or clarity about what was happening. While delays and disruptions have unfortunately become routine on this line, it is always the ordinary commuters who suffer the consequences every single day."

The incident highlights the vulnerability of Mumbai's suburban railway infrastructure, which serves millions of daily commuters. Technical failures during peak hours not only cause immediate disruption but also have cascading effects that can take hours to fully resolve, affecting both personal and professional lives of countless Mumbaikars.
