Modi Praises Adhikari's Grassroots Connection
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, for his deep connection with the people and expressed confidence that his tenure as the state's first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief minister would be fruitful. Modi's remarks came during a virtual interaction with party workers and leaders from West Bengal, where he highlighted Adhikari's long political journey and his ability to connect with the masses.
Adhikari's Political Journey
Suvendu Adhikari, a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongman, joined the BJP in December 2020. He has been a prominent face in West Bengal politics, known for his organizational skills and mass appeal. Modi noted that Adhikari's shift to the BJP had strengthened the party's base in the state. The Prime Minister also recalled Adhikari's role in the 2021 assembly elections, where the BJP won 77 seats, its best performance in the state.
BJP's Growth in West Bengal
The Prime Minister emphasized that the BJP's rise in West Bengal is a testament to the party's commitment to development and good governance. He credited the party's grassroots workers for their tireless efforts in spreading the BJP's message. Modi also expressed optimism that under Adhikari's leadership, the BJP would continue to grow and eventually form the government in the state.
Wishes for a Fruitful Tenure
Modi's remarks were seen as a clear endorsement of Adhikari as the party's chief ministerial candidate for the 2026 assembly elections. The Prime Minister wished Adhikari a fruitful tenure and urged him to continue working for the welfare of the people. He also advised party workers to stay connected with the public and address their grievances effectively.
Opposition's Reaction
The TMC, however, dismissed Modi's comments as premature, pointing out that the BJP is not in power in West Bengal. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that Modi's statement reflects the BJP's desperation to gain a foothold in the state. He added that the people of West Bengal have rejected the BJP's divisive politics and will continue to support the TMC's development agenda.
Despite the criticism, Modi's interaction with West Bengal BJP workers signals the party's focus on the state as a key battleground for future elections. The Prime Minister's praise for Adhikari is likely to boost the morale of party workers and strengthen Adhikari's position within the state unit.
