Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday described the record voter turnout in Bengal over the first two phases of polling as a harbinger of change, expressing confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would form a government in the state for the first time. Speaking at the inauguration of the Ganga Expressway in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, Modi predicted that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would also retain power in Assam and Puducherry, and spring a few surprises in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Modi's Vision for Developed India
The Prime Minister said the election results on May 4 would strengthen the resolve to build a developed India and infuse new energy into the pace of development. He highlighted the high voter turnout in the second phase of polling across 142 constituencies in Bengal as a reflection of elections being held in an atmosphere devoid of fear. Modi lauded the state's electorate for their awareness of democratic rights.
NDA's Momentum
Citing recent electoral performances as a tailwind for the NDA, Modi said the BJP-led alliance was building on its triumph in Bihar and strong showing in local body elections in Gujarat, where it won most municipal councils and nagar panchayats. The PM's remarks come as the opposition alleges irregularities and violence in Bengal, but Modi dismissed such claims, emphasizing the peaceful conduct of polls.
The Ganga Expressway, a 594-km project connecting Meerut to Prayagraj, is expected to boost economic development in the region. Modi said the expressway would reduce travel time and create new opportunities for trade and tourism. The project is part of the central government's infrastructure push ahead of the general elections.
