Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday dismissed any comparison between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, asserting that the two leaders belong to different eras and cannot be equated.
Pawar's Remarks on Modi and Nehru
Speaking to reporters in Pune, Pawar said, 'There is an attempt to project that there is no leader like Narendra Modi. But such comparisons are not appropriate. Nehru and Modi are from different times and contexts. You cannot compare them.' The veteran politician added that while Modi has his own strengths, Nehru's contributions to nation-building are unparalleled.
Political Context
Pawar's comments come amid a growing trend within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to highlight Modi as a transformative figure in Indian history, often drawing parallels with Nehru. The NCP chief, however, cautioned against such narratives, stating that history should be viewed objectively.
When asked about the upcoming presidential election, Pawar declined to comment on potential candidates, saying the opposition would decide collectively. He also touched upon the agrarian crisis, urging the government to address farmers' issues urgently.
The statement has sparked reactions from political circles, with BJP leaders defending their stance on Modi's leadership. Meanwhile, opposition parties have welcomed Pawar's remarks as a balanced perspective on India's political legacy.
