Mob Snatches Rs 13.44 Lakh from Election Squad After Raid on Karti Chidambaram's Office
In a shocking turn of events in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu, a mob brazenly snatched Rs 13.44 lakh in cash from an election flying squad on Monday. The squad had just seized the money moments earlier during a raid on the office premises of Sivaganga MP Karti Chidambaram in Karaikudi.
Chaotic Scene Unfolds During Cash Verification
Acting on a specific tip-off that cash was being stored for potential distribution to voters ahead of elections, the election flying squad conducted a raid at Karti Chidambaram's office. During the operation, officials recovered two bags and a cloth bag stuffed with currency notes.
As officials began verifying the seized cash near their official vehicle, the situation quickly escalated into chaos. A suspect identified as Palaniyappan insisted that the officials count the cash on the spot, which totaled Rs 13.44 lakh. The entire counting process was videographed as per protocol.
Meanwhile, approximately 30 unidentified individuals gathered around the scene as election officials prepared to secure the cash in their vehicle. In a sudden and coordinated move, the mob snatched the bags containing the cash and disappeared into the area before authorities could react.
Strategic Sabotage Prevents Immediate Pursuit
Adding to the confusion and preventing any immediate chase, an unidentified person from the mob took the key of the election officials' vehicle, leaving the squad members stranded at the location. This pre-emptive action allowed the perpetrators to escape with the substantial amount of cash without facing immediate pursuit.
Swift Police Response and Investigation
Upon being informed of the incident, Devakottai sub-collector Ayush Venkat Vats and Karaikudi assistant superintendent of police Ashish Puniya rushed to the spot to assess the situation. Following a formal complaint filed by an election official, police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
Police have since arrested Palaniyappan, who was present during the cash counting and verification process. Authorities have launched an extensive manhunt to identify other members of the mob and recover the robbed cash, which represents a significant seizure in the context of election monitoring operations.
Broader Implications for Election Integrity
This incident highlights the challenges faced by election authorities in maintaining integrity during the electoral process. The brazen nature of the snatching, occurring immediately after an official seizure, raises serious concerns about the enforcement of election expenditure regulations and the security of election officials during sensitive operations.
The recovery of such a substantial amount of cash from a sitting MP's office premises, followed by its dramatic theft from election authorities, underscores the ongoing issues surrounding cash distribution during election periods in various constituencies across the country.
