Congress MLA's Scripture Rape Remark Sparks Political Uproar in Madhya Pradesh
MLA Links Rape to Scriptures, Triggers Political Storm

Congress MLA's Controversial Rape Theory Ignites Political Firestorm

Madhya Pradesh Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya has triggered a massive political controversy with his recent statements linking the rape of women from Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Other Backward Caste (OBC) communities to religious scriptures. His remarks have created a firestorm across political lines in the state.

Baraiya's Controversial Claims

During a media interview, Baraiya presented what he called his "theory" about why women become victims of rape in India. He specifically pointed to women from SC, ST and OBC communities as being the most frequent targets.

"Who are the biggest victims of rape in India?" Baraiya asked during the interview. "Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBCs."

The Congress MLA went on to explain his reasoning. He claimed that religious scriptures he had read promised religious merit to those who established sexual relations with women from these three communities. According to Baraiya, these texts suggest that engaging in such acts provides the same spiritual benefits as going on pilgrimage.

Baraiya elaborated further, saying, "Among Adivasis, SCs and STs, are these extremely beautiful women? Why does rape occur? Such instructions are written in their religious scriptures. It is written that if a person engages in sexual relations with women of a particular caste, he will receive religious merit."

He even extended his theory to explain why rape happens to infants, claiming that perpetrators believe they will gain religious merit regardless of the victim's age.

Political Backlash and Condemnation

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) immediately seized upon Baraiya's comments, using them to attack the Congress party's mindset and values.

Union Minister and former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed strong disapproval. "For me, daughters are like goddesses," Chouhan stated. "We cannot view daughters by dividing them on the basis of caste or society. In our tradition, it has always been believed that the forms of Goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati are reflected in our daughters."

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav called for decisive action against the Congress MLA. "I expect Rahul Gandhi to suspend Congress MLA Phool Singh Baraiya, who has made statements that poison society, and expel him from the party," Yadav demanded.

BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal also condemned the remarks, calling them "extremely unfortunate and condemnable." He added that the statement "exposes the Congress party's anti-women and insensitive mindset."

Congress Distances Itself

The Congress party quickly moved to distance itself from Baraiya's controversial statements. State Congress president Jitu Patwari clarified that the MLA's views represented his personal opinion, not the party's position.

"An offender who commits rape against women has no caste or religion," Patwari asserted. "He is only a criminal and should be given the strictest punishment under the law."

The Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee issued an official statement rejecting Baraiya's interpretation of religious texts. Party media department president Mukesh Nayak said that "a narrow and misleading interpretation of ancient scriptures is harmful to social unity."

Nayak emphasized that Baraiya's remarks were "factually incorrect" and should not be seen as reflecting the Congress party's views. He appealed to party workers and leaders to "understand the essence of ancient texts and avoid falling prey to cultural misconceptions."

Baraiya's Clarification

After his video went viral, Baraiya issued a clarification about his controversial statements. He claimed that the video had been edited in a way that misrepresented his actual position.

"The video has been shot in a way that it shows that the statements reflect my thinking and I am saying this," Baraiya explained. "I wanted to raise the issue that since Independence, rape has not gone down in the country. I have not said anything against women and stand with them."

The Congress MLA maintained that his intention was to highlight the persistent problem of sexual violence in India, particularly in Madhya Pradesh where, according to NCRB data, an average of 22 rapes occur daily.

Broader Context and Implications

This controversy emerges against the backdrop of ongoing political tensions in Madhya Pradesh. The state has witnessed significant political activity recently, with senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi visiting the region.

The incident raises important questions about:

  • Political responsibility for statements made by elected representatives
  • The interpretation of religious texts in contemporary discourse
  • Addressing caste-based violence against women
  • Political accountability in sensitive social matters

As the political storm continues, all eyes remain on how the Congress leadership will handle this sensitive situation and what disciplinary action, if any, will be taken against Baraiya. The controversy has already become a significant talking point in Madhya Pradesh's political landscape, with potential implications for upcoming political developments in the state.
