Gandhinagar: Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani has demanded an apology from Gujarat BJP president Jagdish Vishwakarma over his alleged remarks aimed at Congress MP Geniben Thakor after the local body poll results.
According to sources, Vishwakarma, while addressing a gathering in Banaskantha on Thursday, said the BJP had wrested control of the Banaskantha district panchayat after 30 years from the 'pallu' of Thakor's sari. Mevani, the Congress MLA from Vadgam in Banaskantha, called the remark derogatory and anti-women, saying it insulted Thakor.
'It is deeply unfortunate that the state BJP president used language that is derogatory and disrespectful towards a woman leader,' Mevani said. He said members of the Thakor community should protest against the statement and consider legal action.
Vishwakarma, however, denied making any personal remark against the Banaskantha MP and said his statement was being taken out of context. 'My words are being misquoted. I made the comment only in a political context, and it was not intended as a personal remark against her,' Vishwakarma said.
