The Municipal Corporation of Amritsar has launched a major drive to remove encroachments along key city roads. The Estate Wing teams covered the stretch from SSSS Chowk to Novelty Chowk, the Verka area, and the road from Maqboolpura Chowk to Golden Gate. The operation aims to clear illegally occupied spaces that were causing traffic congestion and safety hazards for commuters.
Details of the Anti-Encroachment Drive
The drive was conducted early in the morning to minimize inconvenience to the public. Officials stated that the encroachments included temporary structures, roadside stalls, and unauthorized parking that had narrowed the roads significantly. The teams used heavy machinery to remove the structures and debris. Shopkeepers and residents were given prior notice to vacate the area voluntarily.
Areas Covered
- SSSS Chowk to Novelty Chowk
- Verka area
- Maqboolpura Chowk to Golden Gate
These stretches are among the busiest in the city, and the removal of encroachments is expected to ease traffic flow and improve road safety. The Municipal Corporation has warned that further action will be taken against repeat offenders.
Public Reaction
Local residents and commuters have welcomed the move. Many expressed relief that the authorities are finally taking action to clear the roads. However, some shopkeepers whose stalls were removed voiced concerns about loss of livelihood. The corporation has assured that alternative arrangements will be considered for legitimate vendors.
The anti-encroachment drive is part of a larger initiative to beautify the city and ensure smooth traffic movement. Similar operations are planned in other parts of Amritsar in the coming days. The Municipal Corporation has urged citizens to cooperate and refrain from encroaching on public property.
