Mayawati Slams President's Parliament Address as Conventional, Demands Focus on Self-Reliance
In a sharp critique from Lucknow, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) national president Mayawati on Wednesday expressed disappointment with President Droupadi Murmu's address to the joint session of Parliament at the commencement of the Budget session. She characterized the speech as appearing more conventional and less beneficial to the general public, emphasizing that it lacked the refinement needed to inspire fresh hope for swift resolutions to India's urgent challenges and to genuinely propel the nation toward self-reliance.
Global Context and India's Vulnerability
Mayawati highlighted the global backdrop, noting that the United States, as the world's foremost power, is pursuing an 'America First' agenda, which has triggered widespread instability internationally. She asserted that it is inevitable for India to feel significant repercussions from such global shifts. In this context, she pointed out the prevailing public anxieties and concerns regarding the government's heavy dependence on the private sector, despite expectations that it would navigate this complex scenario effectively.
Call for Governmental Self-Confidence and Public Welfare
The BSP leader stressed that there is an amplified necessity for the government to exhibit greater self-assurance. "The intensity with which the government targets its opponents both inside and outside Parliament, people are waiting for the same intensity from the government in matters of national and public interest, including self-reliance and foreign policy, to strengthen the self-confidence of the people," Mayawati remarked. She added that it would be fitting if the Budget session of Parliament offered a glimpse of such dedicated efforts.
Furthermore, Mayawati addressed the recent trade agreement between India and the European Union, finalized after nearly two decades. She insisted that this pact must prioritize the interests and welfare of ordinary citizens, alongside benefiting large capitalists and affluent individuals, ensuring it serves a broad spectrum of society.

In a somber note, Mayawati also conveyed her condolences following the tragic death of Nationalist Congress Party leader Ajit Pawar, who served as the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra.
