Mamata Banerjee Questions PM Modi's Dual Role in Bengal Elections
In a sharp retort to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's assertion that he is the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate in all 294 constituencies of West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised a pointed question about his political intentions. Speaking at a rally in Suri, she asked whether Modi "wished to be the CM of Bengal or remain the PM of India." She further demanded that if the Prime Minister genuinely believes he represents every seat, he should resign from his current position to contest the elections directly.
Trinamool Congress Spokesperson Highlights Distinction in Claims
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh noted that Modi's statement appeared to mimic Banerjee's earlier declaration that she is her party's candidate in all seats. However, Ghosh emphasized a critical difference: "Mamata Banerjee can say this because she is fighting the electoral battle herself. But how can the PM make such a claim?" He argued that if Modi is serious about his candidacy, he should step down and prove his mettle in the electoral arena.
Banerjee Criticizes Yogi Adityanath's Bulldozer Remarks
During the same rally, Banerjee also took aim at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who had suggested that bulldozer actions would be implemented in Bengal. She firmly rejected this approach, stating, "I don't believe in bulldozer action. I believe in humanity. We respect all religions and celebrate every festival here." This comment underscores her commitment to secular values and contrasts with the BJP's governance style in other states.
Women's Representation and Delimitation Concerns
Addressing the women's reservation bill pending in Parliament, Banerjee highlighted Bengal's achievements in gender representation. She pointed out that "37% of our elected members in Parliament are women, the highest in the country," and noted 50% women representatives in local bodies. She expressed concerns about women's safety in BJP-ruled states and reiterated her opposition to any delimitation moves that could alter Bengal's boundaries, a stance she had previously indicated.
Strong Criticism of BJP Leadership and Policies
Banerjee launched a broadside against the BJP, accusing the party of destroying "the country, democracy, and the Constitution." She mocked Union Home Minister Amit Shah's plan to camp in Bengal, predicting that "the more he stays, the fewer votes his party will get." Additionally, she challenged Modi's claims about job creation, asking why he failed to deliver two crore jobs annually and alleging that employment opportunities have been taken away in states like UP, Bihar, and Rajasthan.
This rally in Suri marks another chapter in the intense political rivalry between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, setting the stage for a heated electoral battle in West Bengal.
