Polling in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district turned tense on Wednesday after a clash broke out at a booth in Canning Paschim. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, have accused CRPF personnel of assault and voter intimidation during the ongoing Assembly elections. The party is preparing to take legal action against the alleged excesses.
Incident at Canning Paschim Booth
The confrontation occurred when TMC supporters alleged that CRPF personnel were preventing voters from casting their ballots. According to party sources, the situation escalated quickly, leading to physical altercations. Mamata Banerjee, who was campaigning nearby, rushed to the spot and accused the central forces of acting under political pressure. She claimed that the CRPF had detained party workers and forcibly removed them from the polling station.
Allegations of Voter Intimidation
Banerjee alleged that the CRPF's actions were aimed at intimidating TMC voters and manipulating the election outcome. She stated, "This is a clear violation of democratic norms. The CRPF is being used to suppress the voice of the people." The TMC has announced it will file a complaint with the Election Commission and pursue legal remedies.
Security Concerns Escalate
The incident has added to mounting concerns over security and fairness during the West Bengal Assembly elections. Earlier, several other booths reported disruptions, including allegations of EVM tampering and lathi charges. The BJP, on the other hand, has accused TMC workers of creating disturbances and obstructing polling.
Political Reactions
While the TMC has condemned the CRPF's actions, the BJP has defended the security forces, stating they were merely performing their duty. BJP leaders accused Banerjee of making baseless allegations to divert attention from the violence caused by her party workers. The Election Commission is yet to comment on the matter.
As the polling continues, both parties have called for increased vigilance to ensure a free and fair election. The state has seen multiple phases of voting, with security forces deployed extensively to prevent violence. The outcome of this election is expected to be closely contested.
