Kolkata Voters Anxiously Await Supplementary List Amid Judicial Scrutiny Delays
In Kolkata, voters placed under adjudication have begun contacting their Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to inquire about checking their names, ahead of the anticipated publication of the supplementary voter list by Saturday. This surge in inquiries comes as the Election Commission of India (ECI) works to finalize the list, with sources indicating potential delays due to pending data from numerous booths.
Delays and Data Challenges in Voter List Preparation
As of Thursday night, approximately 25 lakh cases have been cleared through the judicial scrutiny process. However, EC sources revealed that data has been received for only 7,000 booths, leaving the rest pending. This backlog may postpone the publication of the supplementary list, heightening anxiety among long-time voters who are uncertain if their names will appear on the final roll after judicial review.
Many voters, frustrated by the lack of clarity, have decided to monitor the Election Commission of India's website closely to access the list and learn the outcome of their Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) Information and Registration (SIR) battles. The ECI had earlier indicated that the first supplementary list would be published either on Friday or Saturday but has not specified where voters can access it, adding to the confusion.
High-Level Meetings to Ensure Law and Order
In preparation for the list's publication, multiple meetings were chaired by Calcutta High Court Chief Justice Sujoy Paul on Thursday. The first meeting involved top brass from the state police, followed by a session with Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Aggarwal. These discussions focused on assessing law and order arrangements to prevent any disruptions during the release of the supplementary list, which affects a section of 60 lakh Bengal voters under "judicial scrutiny."
Earlier on Thursday morning, key officials including Bengal Home Secretary Sanghamitra Ghosh, DGP SN Gupta, Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand, and ADG (Law and Order) Ajey Mukund Ranade met with Chief Justice Paul for approximately 30 minutes. Around noon, these officers, along with Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariyala, called on Governor RN Ravi for another 30-minute meeting. Later in the evening, CEO Manoj Aggarwal also met with the Chief Justice to discuss ongoing preparations.
Voter Experiences and Concerns Amid Uncertainty
Gouri Aich, an elector from Bhowanipore, shared her experience during a hearing at the Survey Building, where she was assured that her logical discrepancy would be resolved based on submitted documents. "On February 28, I discovered my name was under adjudication, and the BLO could not explain the reason. Since the BLO is the primary contact for this exercise, I called her this morning to inquire about the supplementary list expected on Friday. She promised to inform me if my name appears," said Aich.
Anubhav Das, an MBBS student at SSKM and a resident of Ballygunge, has opted to keep a vigilant eye on the ECI's website. "I did not receive a hearing call regarding any logical discrepancy but found my name under adjudication. The BLO collected copies of my passport and my parents' documents. Although there is no clear timeline for the list's release, I will monitor the ECI's website closely," he explained.
Soma Sadhukan, a voter under adjudication from Alipore, expressed her frustration, stating, "I have lived in the city since 1961, but this time I could not pass the SIR test. I am awaiting judicial scrutiny to approve me as an eligible voter and am eagerly waiting for the supplementary list."
The situation underscores the broader challenges in voter registration processes, with many Kolkata residents facing uncertainty and delays. As the Election Commission works to address these issues, voters remain hopeful for a swift resolution to ensure their participation in upcoming electoral activities.
