Kolkata Police STF Intercepts Arms Cache Ahead of Crucial West Bengal Polls
In a significant security operation, the Kolkata Police's Special Task Force (STF) has seized a substantial cache of arms and ammunition and detained a suspect, just days before the two-phase polling in West Bengal. The incident occurred near Rajabazar Science College in Kolkata, highlighting heightened vigilance across the state.
Details of the Interception and Recovery
Acting on specific intelligence and suspicion, STF officers intercepted a man carrying a bag near a busy bus stand in the Rajabazar area. Upon searching the bag, officials recovered six single-shot firearms and 14 cartridges. The man was immediately taken into custody for further interrogation.
Investigators are now working diligently to ascertain the intended destination of these arms and identify the individuals or groups to whom they were meant to be delivered. This development underscores the proactive measures being taken to prevent potential violence or disruption during the electoral process.
Intensified Security Measures Across West Bengal
The seizure comes amid a statewide crackdown on illegal activities, with police setting up numerous roadblocks and conducting rigorous vehicle checks. In recent days, enforcement agencies have also made substantial recoveries of unaccounted cash in separate operations.
- The Kolkata Police's South East Division recovered approximately Rs 25 lakh in cash from a vehicle during a routine check in the Ballygunge Assembly constituency area on Friday.
- Earlier, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized over Rs 72 lakh in cash and detained two suspects near Howrah station. This recovery was made by personnel from the Bamangachhi RPF post during a search operation near the Banaras Bridge area of the railway yard in the Howrah division.
Context of Upcoming Elections
West Bengal is scheduled to go to the polls in two phases on April 23 and 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4. In response to the heightened political activity, officials have ramped up surveillance and checking at sensitive locations to curb the illegal movement of arms, ammunition, and cash.
These measures are part of a broader strategy to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. The recent seizures highlight the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order and prevent any attempts to influence the polls through illicit means.
The detained individual is currently being questioned, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help maintain security during this critical period.
