India is observing National Farmers Day, popularly known as Kisan Diwas, on Tuesday, 23 December 2025. This significant day serves a dual purpose: to honor the invaluable contributions of the nation's farmers and to commemorate the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, a stalwart advocate for agricultural communities.
Honoring the Annadata and a Farmer's Leader
Farmers in India hold the revered title of 'annadaata', a Sanskrit term meaning 'giver of food'. Kisan Diwas reinforces their status as the backbone of the nation's economy and food security. The day is intrinsically linked to the legacy of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India's fifth Prime Minister, who is remembered for his deep understanding of rural challenges and his unwavering commitment to farmers' rights and welfare.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes to Charan Singh in a post on social media platform X. "On the occasion of his birth anniversary, humble tribute to former Prime Minister Bharat Ratna Chaudhary Charan Singh Ji, the true well-wisher of the poor and farmers," PM Modi wrote. He added that Singh's dedication and spirit of service to the nation will continue to inspire everyone.
The Significance of December 23
The Government of India officially declared 23 December as National Farmers Day in 2001. This date was chosen to align with Charan Singh's birth anniversary and to permanently etch the crucial role of farmers in the national consciousness. The observance highlights the persistent challenges faced by the agricultural sector, including the need for equitable crop pricing, adoption of sustainable farming practices, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
It also aims to promote awareness about various government schemes designed to support farmers, such as subsidies, crop insurance, and loan facilities, which aim to bolster resilience and foster industry development. Last year, the theme for Kisan Diwas was 'Empowering Annadatas for a Prosperous Nation', underscoring this focus on support and empowerment.
A Legacy Recognized with Bharat Ratna
In a move that underscored his enduring legacy, former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh was posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in March of last year. President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious award, which was received by Singh's grandson, Jayant Singh, a minister in the current Union government led by PM Modi.
National Farmers Day 2025 stands as a powerful, annual reminder. It calls upon the nation to acknowledge the toil of its food providers, address their systemic issues, and continually work towards improving their quality of life for the sustained prosperity and stability of the country.
