A 57-year-old woman succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident on Rani Jhansi Road in Ludhiana, prompting police to file charges against the driver of the speeding vehicle. The incident occurred on April 22 when the victim, Vanti, a resident of Prem Nagar, was returning home from a market with her sister-in-law, Kanta Devi.
Details of the Collision
According to the police complaint, a Hyundai Verna driven by Amarinder Singh of Jandali village struck the auto-rickshaw from behind at high speed. The impact caused the rickshaw to overturn, throwing Vanti out onto the road. She sustained severe head injuries and was immediately taken to a private hospital, where she died three days later, on Saturday.
Legal Action Taken
Following Vanti's death, an FIR was registered on Sunday against Singh at the Division Number 8 police station. Investigating officer Asees Kumar, a head constable, confirmed that the accused has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include Section 281 (rash driving), Section 125(A) (act endangering personal safety), and Section 106 (causing death by negligence).
Status of the Accused
Authorities stated that Singh remains at large, but an arrest is expected shortly. Police are actively searching for him to bring him to justice. The case highlights the dangers of reckless driving on city roads.
Vanti's family has been left devastated by the sudden loss. The community has expressed concern over road safety, urging stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such tragedies in the future.
