Kejriwal Accuses Government of Negligence in Deadly Palam Village Fire
Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the grieving family affected by the devastating blaze in Palam Village, delivering a scathing critique of what he termed as "government failure and negligence" that he claims resulted in nine tragic deaths. The fire, which erupted in a residential-cum-commercial building on Wednesday, claimed the lives of nine members of Rajender Kashyap's family, sparking political turmoil and accusations between rival parties.
Political Clashes Erupt During Visit
Kejriwal's visit was marred by confrontations, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader alleging that BJP workers obstructed his meeting with the bereaved family. In a post on social media platform X, Kejriwal detailed the incident, stating, "I went to meet the bereaved family in Palam, to share their grief, but BJP workers stopped us from meeting them, misbehaved, threw chairs. What kind of people are they?" He further lamented that "humanity has completely vanished from these people," criticizing what he described as thuggery at the home of the grieving family.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva countered these allegations, claiming that AAP functionaries "misbehaved with and assaulted a local BJP MLA." Video evidence from the scene depicted groups of political workers engaged in heated scuffles, pushing and jostling, though police have yet to issue an official statement regarding the altercations. AAP functionary Vinay Mishra reported being attacked by BJP members, while Palam MLA Kuldeep Solanki accused AAP workers of assaulting him.
Allegations of Systemic Failures in Emergency Response
Beyond the political skirmishes, Kejriwal highlighted critical failures in the emergency response. He asserted that the fire brigade vehicle arrived late and, upon arrival, its hydraulic lift malfunctioned, severely hampering rescue efforts. "People trapped in the fire kept pleading for help for hours.... If help had reached on time, many lives could have been saved," Kejriwal emphasized, painting a harrowing picture of victims writhing in agony as they awaited assistance.
He condemned the situation, stating, "One family has lost nine members. Despite this, that family is being threatened and intimidated," suggesting ongoing harassment of the affected family amidst their tragedy.
BJP's Rebuttal and Counteraccusations
In response, Sachdeva criticized Kejriwal for blaming the fire brigade, calling it "unfortunate." He explained that the building's lower floors contained godowns and shops stocked with large quantities of inflammable materials, which ignited rapidly and spread the blaze. "Many deaths had occurred before the fire brigade arrived," Sachdeva noted, shifting focus to the building's hazardous conditions rather than response delays.
Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor escalated the political feud by challenging AAP to account for its own governance record. He demanded that AAP functionaries explain how many of their ministers resigned over fatal fire incidents during AAP's tenure in power, implying hypocrisy in Kejriwal's accusations.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigations
The Palam Village fire tragedy has ignited a fierce political debate in Delhi, with both parties leveraging the incident to critique each other's governance and responsiveness. The allegations of negligence, coupled with the violent clashes during Kejriwal's visit, underscore the heightened tensions in the region's political landscape.
As investigations into the fire's cause and the subsequent political disturbances continue, the focus remains on the nine lives lost and the systemic issues highlighted by this catastrophic event. The community awaits further developments, hoping for accountability and improved safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
