Bengaluru: As Chief Minister Siddaramaiah approaches the three-year mark in office on May 10, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and his brother DK Suresh have intensified their lobbying efforts in New Delhi. The duo has been meeting senior Congress functionaries, fueling speculation about a possible change in Karnataka's leadership.
Over the past two days, Shivakumar and Suresh met with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with senior leaders KC Venugopal and Randeep Surjewala. When questioned about the meetings, Shivakumar declined to provide details, stating that it was an internal party matter and he would not discuss it with the media.
Party insiders indicate that Shivakumar reiterated his claim to the Chief Minister's post, with his supporters pointing to an alleged rotational arrangement following the 2023 assembly elections. However, the party high command has not officially confirmed any such understanding, although Kharge has made remarks about internal coordination.
Some functionaries view the Delhi meetings as Shivakumar's final push for the top post, as he is aware that Siddaramaiah will call for a cabinet reshuffle to strengthen his position. Others see the talks as part of routine consultations.
Jarkiholi Admits Confusion
In Bengaluru, Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi acknowledged the uncertainty within the state Congress. "It is true there is 100 percent confusion in the state Congress party. There is confusion over the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and cabinet reorganisation. We have requested the high command to resolve the issue. Everything will be set right soon," he said.
Priyank Kharge Downplays Visit
Minister Priyank Kharge downplayed Shivakumar's Delhi visit and dismissed the leadership chatter. "What is wrong in meeting a Union minister (Defence Minister Rajnath Singh)? He has gone to discuss Bengaluru-related issues and development works. Should he not meet leaders?" Priyank asked.
