Kargil War Hero Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, the 'Lion of Ladakh', Passes Away at 61
Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, a decorated hero of the 1999 Kargil War and recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second highest gallantry award, has passed away at the age of 61. The veteran officer died of a heart attack at his residence in Leh, Ladakh, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and service.
Nation Mourns the Loss of a Valiant Soldier
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed deep condolences on the passing of Colonel Wangchuk, highlighting his exemplary contributions to the nation. The Indian Army also issued an official statement mourning the loss of the war hero, acknowledging his pivotal role in one of India's most significant military conflicts.
"A proud son of Ladakh, he exemplified the spirit of the region—resilient, steadfast and deeply rooted in service to the Nation, while standing as a symbol of India’s unity in diversity," stated Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in his tribute.
Heroic Actions During the Kargil War
During the Kargil War, then Major Sonam Wangchuk, serving with the Ladakh Scouts, led a series of daring missions in the strategically vital Batalik sector. His most notable operation took place on the remote Chorbat ridge, a critical logistics hub that supplied areas opposite both the Batalik and Turtuk sectors. Pakistani forces had established a strong presence in this region prior to the conflict.
On May 28, 1999, Major Wangchuk was tasked with setting up an observation post at Chorbat La. Leading a small team comprising a Junior Commissioned Officer and three jawans, he engaged with four Pakistani soldiers, resulting in two enemy casualties while the remaining two fled. Following this, he was assigned to reinforce a post anticipating an imminent Pakistani attack.
The officer and twelve others moved through the night to bolster the post's defenses. After enduring six hours of intense shelling, they successfully repelled a Pakistani assault. Demonstrating exceptional courage, Major Wangchuk then launched a counterattack on a nearby feature, eliminating six enemy soldiers. In recognition of his sustained heroic actions, he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
Legacy and Honors
Two posts in the Batalik sector, named 'Sonam 1' and 'Sonam 2', stand as enduring tributes to his valor. In 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind released a documentary titled 'Lion of Ladakh', chronicling how Colonel Wangchuk and his troops captured Pakistani positions under extremely challenging conditions.
Beyond his service in the Kargil War, Colonel Wangchuk, who was commissioned into the Assam Regiment, also served in insurgency-affected Manipur and was deployed in Sri Lanka as part of Operation Pawan. His career epitomized dedication and bravery across diverse theaters of conflict.
