The INDIA bloc faces a critical test in Jharkhand as it prepares for the Rajya Sabha elections on June 18, with the BJP-led NDA aiming to replicate its successes in Bihar and Odisha. The ruling coalition holds 56 MLAs, sufficient to win two seats, but the entry of an independent candidate backed by the NDA has turned the contest into a high-stakes battle.
Numbers Game
A candidate needs 28 first-preference votes to win. The NDA has 24 MLAs, while the INDIA bloc comprises 34 from JMM, 16 from Congress, and 4 from RJD. The ruling coalition has the exact numbers to win both seats, but cross-voting could upset their plans.
Candidates in Fray
Three candidates are contesting: JMM's Baidyanath Ram, Congress's Pranav Jha, and NDA-backed independent Parimal Nathwani. While Ram is expected to win easily, the second seat is a tight race between Jha and Nathwani.
Resort Politics and Preparations
Both camps are working to keep their MLAs united. NDA MLAs were moved to a hotel in Ranchi and briefed on voting procedures through mock polls. The INDIA bloc also held meetings and mock polls at Chief Minister Hemant Soren's residence to prevent cross-voting.
Confidence on Both Sides
Congress MLA Suresh Baitha expressed confidence that all 56 INDIA bloc MLAs are united and will win both seats. However, BJP state chief Aditya Sahu claimed victory for Nathwani, stating that several opposition MLAs will vote according to their conscience.
Lessons from Bihar and Odisha
In March, the INDIA bloc lost a Rajya Sabha seat in Bihar due to cross-voting by four MLAs, allowing the BJP to win an extra seat. Similarly, in Odisha, cross-voting by BJD and Congress MLAs helped the BJP-backed independent win, defeating the joint candidate.
Why Cross-Voting is Hard to Prevent
Rajya Sabha elections use an open ballot system, but parties cannot issue whips. MLAs show their vote to party agents but can vote against the party line. Post-election, parties can take action under anti-defection laws.
What to Expect in Jharkhand
The INDIA bloc must keep its MLAs, especially the four from RJD, from cross-voting. The NDA needs only four defectors to win. The results will reveal whether the ruling coalition can hold together or if the BJP will spring another surprise.
