Despite the severe winter chill and dense fog, residents of Jaipur are demonstrating remarkable enthusiasm by gathering daily along Mahal Road in Jagatpura to witness the rehearsals for the upcoming 78th Army Day Parade. The spectacle of marching contingents and military hardware has turned the stretch into a major attraction, drawing crowds from across the region.
A Patriotic Gathering Defies Harsh Weather
Hundreds of people, including children and the elderly, have been braving the cold to secure a spot along the road. With visibility dropping to around 50 metres and temperatures plunging to a low of 6.8°C, the conditions are far from ideal. Yet, the desire to see the armed forces' ceremonial display up close has proven stronger than the biting cold. The scene has become so popular that some visitors are making special trips of 40 to 50 kilometres after seeing viral videos of the drills on social media platforms.
"It Feels Like Delhi's Rajpath": Locals React
For many, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Rajendra Vyas, who travelled from Goner, expressed his awe, comparing the atmosphere to the iconic Rajpath in Delhi. "Until now, we only saw such defence equipment and tanks on television in the news or during the Republic Day Parade. It is unreal to see this right in front of me," he said. Vyas arrived as early as 8:30 am on Tuesday to get a clear view and is actively seeking information on how to attend the main parade on January 15. He added that his relatives from villages nearly 100 kilometres away have been calling him to inquire about watching the event.
The patriotic fervour is palpable among the youngest spectators as well. Children in the crowd were seen enthusiastically saluting the soldiers during their practice marches. The event's significance has even drawn educators from their workplaces. A group of seven teachers from a nearby primary school took time out to watch the rehearsal for about an hour. Teacher Gulab Kourani explained their motivation: "This is something so rare that all teachers took some time out of work and came to see the parade. We are witnessing the discipline of the defence forces in person. The cold weather is nothing compared to this experience."
Showcase of Military Prowess and History
The rehearsals offer a preview of the discipline and coordination that will be on full display during the main event. Beyond the marching drills, the upcoming parade and exhibition are set to feature military equipment that highlights the Indian Army's capabilities. Notably, the display will include equipment that played a crucial role in Operation Sindoor, showcasing a part of the army's operational history and strength to the public.
The overwhelming public turnout at the rehearsals in Jaipur underscores the deep respect and curiosity citizens hold for the armed forces. It transforms the annual Army Day celebration from a distant ceremonial event into an accessible and inspiring community experience, fostering a direct connection between the nation's defenders and its people.
