Indian Navy to commission stealth frigate Mahendragiri

The Indian Navy is set to commission its latest stealth frigate, Mahendragiri, at Visakhapatnam on July 11, 2026. This vessel is the sixth of seven such warships being constructed under Project-17A at a combined cost of approximately Rs 45,000 crore.

Construction and Cost

The Mahendragiri is being built by Mazagaon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata. These two shipyards are jointly executing the Project-17A program, which aims to enhance the Navy's surface combat capabilities with advanced stealth features.

Significance of the Commissioning

The commissioning ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Eastern Naval Command headquarters in Visakhapatnam. The frigate is named after the Mahendragiri mountain range in Odisha, continuing the tradition of naming Indian Navy frigates after mountain ranges.

According to defense officials, the Mahendragiri incorporates significant indigenous content, including advanced weapon systems and sensors, aligning with the government's Make in India initiative. The frigate is expected to bolster the Navy's operational reach and maritime security in the Indian Ocean region.

Project-17A Overview

Project-17A involves the construction of seven stealth frigates, with MDL building four and GRSE building three. The first ship of the class, INS Nilgiri, was commissioned earlier, and the remaining vessels are at various stages of construction and trials. The total project cost of Rs 45,000 crore covers design, construction, and integration of advanced systems.

Each frigate is equipped with stealth technology to reduce radar cross-section, making them harder to detect. They also feature advanced anti-ship and anti-air missiles, torpedoes, and helicopter operations capabilities.

Impact on Naval Capabilities

The induction of Mahendragiri will enhance the Indian Navy's fleet strength and modernize its surface combatant force. The frigates are designed for multi-role operations, including fleet escort, maritime patrol, and power projection. With increasing maritime challenges, these vessels are critical for maintaining regional stability.

Indian Navy officials have emphasized that the project demonstrates India's growing self-reliance in warship construction. The commissioning event will be attended by senior naval officers and dignitaries.
