Indian Army Expands Pinaka Rocket Launcher Regiments to Fortify Borders
In response to escalating security threats along India's western and northern frontiers, particularly following last year's conflict with Pakistan, the Indian Army has significantly bolstered its artillery capabilities. Military sources confirm that the Army has recently added another Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher regiment to its arsenal and is actively preparing to induct one more before the conclusion of this calendar year.
Strategic Deployment and Operational Status
With the operationalization of this latest regiment, the Indian Army now maintains seven fully functional Pinaka rocket launcher regiments strategically positioned along its sensitive borders with Pakistan and China. This deployment forms a critical component of India's defensive and deterrent posture in these volatile regions.
"The eighth regiment has already received more than half of its required equipment and is projected to become fully operational prior to the end of 2026," revealed a knowledgeable defense source familiar with the induction timeline. Future Expansion Plans and Long-Term Goals
The expansion does not stop with the eighth regiment. Defense planners anticipate that two additional Pinaka regiments will be operationalized next year, which would bring the total number of deployed regiments to an impressive ten. This represents substantial progress toward the Army's ambitious long-term objective of fielding twenty-two complete Pinaka regiments.
These future regiments are expected to be equipped with the latest, technologically advanced versions of the Pinaka system, including newer guided variants that offer significantly extended operational ranges compared to earlier models.

The Pinaka rocket launcher system stands as a premier example of India's growing indigenous defense manufacturing prowess. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this system represents a major achievement in domestic weapons technology.
In August 2020, the Indian Army formalized its commitment to expanding the Pinaka fleet by signing substantial contracts with three leading Indian defense manufacturers: Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), Tata Power Company Limited (TPCL), and Larsen & Toubro. These agreements, valued at approximately 2,580 crore rupees, secured the supply of equipment for six complete Pinaka regiments, laying the foundation for the current expansion.
Technological Evolution and Capability Enhancement
The Pinaka system has undergone significant technological evolution since its initial deployment. Early versions of the rocket launcher had an effective range of approximately 40 kilometers, providing substantial area saturation capabilities.
However, newer variants such as the Guided Pinaka and the Long-Range Guided Rocket have dramatically extended this reach to distances of up to 120 kilometers. This enhanced range transforms the Pinaka from a tactical weapon into a strategic asset capable of deep-strike operations against high-value targets well behind enemy lines, fundamentally altering the Army's operational calculus in potential conflict scenarios.
