IAF Launches Investigation Into Sukhoi Fighter Jet's Hard Landing Incident in Pune
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has formally ordered a comprehensive court of inquiry following a significant hard landing incident involving a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet at Pune's civil-military airport. This development comes as flight operations at the facility have resumed after an extensive overnight shutdown that lasted nearly ten hours, disrupting both military and civilian air traffic.
Official Confirmation and Immediate Response
IAF spokesperson Wing Commander Jaideep Singh officially confirmed the initiation of the probe into the alarming incident. In his statement, Wing Commander Singh emphasized the swift and decisive actions taken by the air force to restore normalcy at the airport. "Work was executed at a war footing throughout last night to safely remove the disabled aircraft from the runway and ensure the operational readiness of the runway. Airport operations successfully recommenced this morning," he stated, highlighting the urgency of the recovery efforts.
Investigative Focus and Technical Examination
Senior IAF officers have revealed that the court of inquiry will meticulously examine multiple critical factors that may have contributed to the hard landing. Investigators are set to analyze the aircraft's vertical speed at the moment of touchdown and evaluate the pilots' response during the landing sequence. "Typically, multiple factors converge to cause a heavy landing in any fighter jet. Our technical team will conduct a thorough examination of each aircraft system to pinpoint any potential technical malfunctions," explained an officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The officer further elaborated on one of the crucial components under scrutiny: "One of the pivotal elements in this investigation is the oleo-pneumatic system. This system is instrumental in assessing the landing impact and determining whether it functioned as intended during the incident."
Incident Details and Operational Impact
The Sukhoi Su-30MKI experienced a severe undercarriage failure during its landing procedure on Friday, which left the advanced fighter jet stranded directly on the runway. This mechanical failure necessitated the immediate closure of the airport to facilitate the safe removal of the aircraft and conduct preliminary assessments of the runway's condition.
The nearly ten-hour shutdown significantly impacted flight schedules, affecting both commercial aviation and military operations. The resumption of operations marks a critical step toward normalcy, but the IAF's inquiry underscores the seriousness with which the incident is being treated, aiming to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety and reliability of India's frontline fighter aircraft fleet.
