Himachal's Military Heartbeat: ARTRAC Chief Honors Veterans

Lt Gen Sukriti Singh Dahiya, Chief of Staff at the Army Training Command in Shimla, delivered a powerful speech on Wednesday. He spoke at the 10th Armed Forces Veterans' Day event held at the ARTRAC headquarters. The ceremony took place just one day before the 78th Army Day celebrations.

Himachal's Unbreakable Bond with the Military

Lt Gen Dahiya emphasized the strong martial tradition of Himachal Pradesh. He stated that the state has a deep-rooted military ethos closely tied to preserving India's integrity. "I don't think there is any family in Himachal which does not have a member in the Armed forces," he remarked. "So, as far as the heartbeat of Himachal is concerned, it beats very close to the military fraternity."

He further noted that even those not serving in the military show tremendous respect and support for the Armed Forces. The COS expressed extreme gratitude for this alignment. Reflecting on history, he commended the many sacrifices made by people from Himachal to maintain national security and integrity.

Honoring Veterans and Their Legacy

"Before we think of the Army, we need to first think of our veterans," said Lt Gen Dahiya. He summed up the core significance of Veterans' Day with this statement. The day acknowledges the unwavering courage and commitment of veterans, which continues to inspire every citizen.

Armed Forces Veterans' Day is observed annually on January 14. This date marks the retirement of Field Marshal KM Cariappa, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, in 1953. The day serves to recognize his service and that of all veterans.

Formal Outreach and Welfare Initiatives

Lt Gen Dahiya explained that while defence forces stay connected with veterans year-round, this event provides a formal occasion for outreach. The aim is to thank veterans for their service and seek guidance based on their extensive experience. The COS highlighted efforts to enhance awareness and satisfaction among veterans by addressing welfare, pension, and entitlement issues, including those concerning next of kin.

Project NAMAN, an Army initiative, focuses on facilitating welfare services for veterans, their families, and next of kin. It utilizes digital pension systems like SPARSH and common service centers for ex-servicemen to streamline support.

Felicitating Distinguished Veterans

During the ceremony, Lt Gen Dahiya felicitated five veterans for their outstanding contributions. These veterans have made significant impacts in various fields:

  • Hospitality
  • Welfare of Veer Naris
  • Youth affairs
  • Anti-drug campaigns
  • Entrepreneurship and societal upliftment

The event underscored the enduring spirit of service and sacrifice that defines Himachal Pradesh's relationship with the military, reinforcing the state's pivotal role in India's defence narrative.
