Kerala, Puducherry, and Assam Witness Surge in Voter Participation

According to the latest data released by the Election Commission, the states of Kerala, Puducherry, and the union territory of Assam have all recorded a higher voter turnout in Thursday's assembly elections compared to the 2021 polls. This significant increase in civic participation underscores the heightened political engagement across these regions.

Puducherry Leads with Record-Breaking Turnout

Puducherry reported the highest turnout at an impressive 89.20%, marking a substantial rise from approximately 82.2% in the 2021 assembly elections. This surge highlights the territory's active electoral involvement.

Assam and Kerala Follow with Notable Increases

Assam followed closely with a turnout of 85.10%, up from 82.04% in the previous election. Kerala recorded a turnout of 77.50%, slightly higher than the around 76% observed in 2021. These figures reflect a growing voter enthusiasm in both states.

Election Details and Voting Process

Voting was conducted for 126 seats in Assam, 140 seats in Kerala, and 30 seats in Puducherry. After the polling concluded, officials meticulously sealed the electronic voting machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units at the respective booths. The counting of votes for all three regions is scheduled to take place on May 4.

Kerala's Electoral Landscape

In Kerala, over 2.6 crore voters were eligible to cast their ballots across 140 constituencies, with a total of 883 candidates in the fray. The electorate comprised:

  • 1,38,27,319 women voters
  • 1,31,26,048 male voters
  • 277 third-gender voters

Notably, around 4,24,518 voters were in the 18–19 age group, while 2,04,608 were aged 85 and above. A total of 30,471 polling stations were established to facilitate the voting process.

The primary contest in Kerala is between the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), which has been in power for the past decade, and the United Democratic Front (UDF), which is striving to unseat it. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is also actively challenging both fronts, adding to the political dynamics.

Assam's Voting Demographics

In Assam, more than 2.5 crore voters were eligible to vote for the 126-member assembly, with 722 candidates contesting. The electorate included:

  • 1,25,31,552 male voters
  • 1,25,22,593 female voters
  • 318 transgender voters

The main contest in the state is between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Congress-led alliance, setting the stage for a closely watched electoral battle.

Puducherry's Electoral Scenario

Puducherry had 10,14,070 voters eligible to cast their votes for 30 assembly seats. The electorate consisted of:

  • 5,39,125 women
  • 4,74,788 men
  • 157 third-gender voters

A total of 24,156 voters were in the 18–19 age group, indicating a youthful participation.

The ruling NDA, comprising the All India NR Congress and the BJP, is facing a challenge from the Congress-DMK alliance. Additionally, actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is in the fray, making the contest triangular and intensifying the political competition.

This increased voter turnout across Kerala, Puducherry, and Assam reflects a robust democratic process, with citizens actively shaping their political futures. The results on May 4 will be crucial in determining the new governments in these regions.
